About the test
Is this an official CEFR certification?▾
No. Nivelo is not affiliated with the Council of Europe, Cambridge English, or Instituto Cervantes. Our test is CEFR-aligned: graded against the same descriptors, using the same scales. For an official certificate, you need DELE (Spanish) or Cambridge (English). Many users take our test 6-12 weeks before their real exam to predict readiness.
How accurate is the grading?▾
We validate calibration against testers with independently-known CEFR levels (DELE/Cambridge takers, certified tutor placements). Target: within one CEFR level for 90%+ of testers. The 5-minute test gives a range; the 30-minute paid test pinpoints a single level. Writing and speaking are scored against the same CEFR descriptors examiners use — and we keep improving calibration as more real usage data accumulates.
Can I retake the test?▾
Yes. The 5-minute free test can be retaken any time. The 30-minute paid test ($4.99) includes one free retake within 30 days if you feel the result was off. Subscribers get unlimited test retakes (with a 7-day cooldown).
How long does the test take?▾
The free test is 5 minutes (10 questions). The paid 30-minute test grades all 4 skills (reading, writing, listening, speaking) and gives you a precise CEFR level with a detailed feedback report.
What languages do you support?▾
English and Spanish at launch. Both languages are supported equally — not afterthoughts. French (DELF/DALF) is the next priority based on market size; targeted for Year 2.
Pricing & subscription
How much does it cost?▾
The 5-minute test is free, no signup required. The 30-minute paid test is $4.99. The optional subscription (launching after Phase 1) is $9.99/month or $99/year (annual = 2 months free). First 50 subscribers get founding-tier pricing locked at $7.99/month for as long as you stay subscribed.
How do I cancel my subscription?▾
Sign in, go to /account/subscription/manage, and click "Cancel." We'll offer a pause (1-3 months, no charge) and a discounted continuation option before confirming. After confirmation, you keep access through the end of your current billing period. No hoops.
What's your refund policy?▾
30-min test ($4.99): refundable within 7 days IF the test hasn't been started. Once started, no refund — but we'll grant a free retake within 30 days if you feel the result was off. Subscription: 7-day money-back from initial signup. Cancel anytime — you keep access through the period you paid for.
Do you offer a free trial of the subscription?▾
Yes — 7-day free trial, card required upfront (standard SaaS pattern). If you've already bought the 30-min test within the last 7 days, you get a 14-day trial instead (bonus +7 days for paying for the detailed test).
Privacy & data
What do you do with my data?▾
Your test results and saved vocabulary are kept while your account is active. Audio recordings for the speaking section are transcribed immediately and deleted within 24 hours (transcribe-and-delete pattern). We don't sell your data. Self-serve account deletion via Settings → Privacy → Delete Account.
Where are you based legally?▾
United States. US-based Terms of Service. We follow standard data protection practices including GDPR-style data export and deletion on request.
Do I need to sign up to take the test?▾
Not for the 5-minute free test — you can take it anonymously. You'd only sign up if you want to save your result, see a detailed skill breakdown, or take the 30-minute paid test.
Technical
What browsers / devices work?▾
Mobile-responsive web. Works on all modern browsers (Chrome, Safari, Firefox, Edge). The speaking section requires microphone access — iOS Safari 14.5+ and any current desktop browser handle this fine. Native iOS and Android apps are planned post-launch.
Why does the listening test only play twice?▾
It matches real CEFR exam conditions. One play is panic-inducing; three plays makes it feel like a quiz instead of a test. Two plays is the sweet spot used by DELE, Cambridge, and most CEFR-aligned exams.
Can I take the test offline?▾
Not currently — grading is cloud-based. Listening audio is cached and could work offline after first load, but the test infrastructure assumes connectivity. Native mobile apps (Phase 6) will explore offline modes.
