How does the IELTS band estimate work?

IELTS reports your English on a 0–9 band scale. This free test measures two of the four IELTS skills — reading and listening — with a short adaptive quiz, then maps your result onto the IELTS band scale. Because it's two skills, it's an estimate to orient you, not an official band.

Your true overall IELTS band is the average of all four skills — reading, listening, writing, and speaking. To see your full band, you'd add writing and speaking (the full test). But reading and listening alone already give a solid ballpark of where you stand.

What CEFR level is each IELTS band?

IELTS aligns approximately to the CEFR — the international A1–C2 scale. There's no exact one-to-one conversion (IELTS says so itself), so treat this as a guide, not arithmetic:

CEFRIELTS bandIn short
C28.5–9.0Near-native mastery
C17.0–8.0Advanced — competitive universities
B25.5–6.5Upper-intermediate — most undergrad admission
B14.0–5.0Intermediate — pathway programs
A23.0–3.5Elementary
Approximate CEFR ↔ IELTS band alignment (IELTS states there is no exact conversion). B1/A2 rows are estimates.

How can I raise my IELTS band?

Find your weakest skill first, then drill it — a weak section drags your overall band down because it's an average. After this estimate, take the free CEFR test too for a second read on your level, then use Nivelo's reading, listening, writing feedback and vocabulary practice to close the gap to your target band.

Frequently asked questions

Can I check my IELTS level for free?

Yes — this free 5-minute test estimates your IELTS band from a short reading and listening quiz, with no signup. It's an approximate, unofficial estimate to orient you; only an official IELTS test gives a certified band.

What CEFR level is IELTS 6.5?

Roughly the B2/C1 boundary. As rough anchors: B2 ≈ IELTS 5.5–6.5 and C1 ≈ 7.0–8.0. IELTS states there is no exact CEFR-to-band conversion, so treat any chart as a guide.

Is this an official IELTS score?

No — it's a free, approximate estimate, not an official IELTS band, and Nivelo isn't affiliated with IELTS. It measures reading and listening only; your official overall band averages all four skills (adding writing and speaking).

How accurate is the estimate?

It gives a sensible ballpark from two of the four skills, mapped onto IELTS's own approximate CEFR alignment. For a full four-skill picture take the complete test, and for a certified band sit the official IELTS exam.

CEFR-based proficiency assessment. Not an official certification from Cambridge, Cervantes, or the Council of Europe.
